FAQ

  • How much is the SEAI solar grant?
You can avail up to €2,100 SEAI grant to support the installation of solar PV panels for your home. When discussing your Solar PV system with one of our solar experts, we run through the amount relevant to your system size. We have always and will continue to always give the amount of the grant off the price of your system, at the point of purchase. We then administer all grant work in RJ Solar Energy and retrospectively claim the grant back, in the months following installation. This allows you to avail of the full grant amount up front, rather than waiting months and enduring the process alone.
  • Who is eligible?
-All homeowners, including private landlords. -Home built and occupied before 31st December 2020. -No previous funding for Solar PV at this MPRN.
  • How long will the SEAI grant scheme be available?
This is a pilot scheme from SEAI and although we would love to have it forever, it’s impossible to say when the scheme will end or be downgraded. Therefore it is important to state that it is currently a pilot scheme and up for periodic review by the department.
  • Can solar panels heat my water too?
You can heat your hot water cylinder by adding a Hot Water Divert to your solar PV system. This will allow you to redirect any excess electricity generated by your solar panels to your immersion and avoid sending the electricity back to the grid. This will help you maximise the efficiency of your solar panels and generate up to 80% of your annual hot water needs.
  • How much does PV panels installation cost?
Prices vary from property to property taking individual constraints into consideration. Please contact us today to get a quote
  • Why is a battery important?
When solar power is created, it must be used immediately, otherwise your unused electricity will spill over to the grid. To avoid spilling your excess electricity to the grid, a battery is needed. A battery stores excess solar electricity generated for use later in the day.
  • How long do solar panels last?
Our high quality solar panels come with a 25 year product and 30 year performance warranty but they can last a lot longer than that. Your solar expert will explain all of the benefits and impact of each panel when specifying your products.
  • Is planning permission required for solar panels?
Planning permission is no longer required for solar PV panels. However, if your dwelling is a protected structure or listed building, we recommend you seek guidance from your local planning authority.
  • What is the typical payback period on a solar system?
The typical payback period for a solar system without a battery is between 4-5 years, and with a battery it is typically 7-8 years.
  • Will I get paid for electricity that goes back into the national grid?
As of 2022, the Irish government has announced that homeowners will be paid for the electricity they produce through their solar PV system and export to the grid. This microgeneration scheme will see the homeowner compensated for the electricity by their energy supplier. The rate and form of the *Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) payment (credit or rebate) will be decided upon by the energy provider. Learn more about Microgeneration from our partners SSE Airtricity here: ogeneration FAQ | SSE Airticity * The measured Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) is the government policy name for the export tariff that all energy suppliers will pay to customers for their solar electricity exported to the grid. The rates will be set by each supplier on a per kWh basis and is intended to reflect the value of the export to the grid. This means your actual export to the grid will be measured and you will be paid accordingly.
  • Is it hot and sunny enough in Ireland for Solar to be worth it?
As we know Ireland is not known for its hot sunny weather, however, it is visible light that drives solar PV cells, not the heat from the sun. You would typically think that when the sun is not out, there wouldn’t be much solar energy. Thankfully this is not the case. Even cloudy Irish days have very good visible light levels and this resource is substantial. The other big advantage that Ireland has is that when seasonal intensity of visible light is at its peak, we have long hours of daylight.
  • How long will it take from purchase to installation?
When you register your details with us, we will give you a call to organise an appointment with one of our solar consultants. If you decide to go ahead with solar upon our consultants visit, a technical survey will be conducted before any installation and you’ll be consulted by our installations team on available installation dates that suit you.
